Community-Based Participatory Research

Description of Training:

Community-based participatory research (CBPR) is a philosophy and framework for conducting collaborative research that emphasizes the value of community members as equal partners. In CBPR, community representatives are engaged as research partners in each stage of the research, from formulating the research question to designing the study to data collection, analysis, and dissemination of results.


This training can be tailored for three types of audiences: 1) academic researchers, 2) community members, and 3) students. For academic researchers, the focus of the CBPR training is how to adapt existing methodologies to incorporate community engagement. The value of community participation is emphasized. For community members, the training focuses on the research process and the typical roles of researchers throughout the research process. For students, the training is entails a more basic introduction to CBPR and allows time for application of CBPR principles to a set of case study examples.
